Distant Voices
Welcome to the Distant Voices series, dedicated to capturing the food memories and stories of the people of the comunes of Sorano and Castell’Azzarra here in Southern Tuscany. Distant Voices aims to record stories of a world that is rapidly being lost. A time when people were largely self-sufficient, when they lived off what they could grow, animals they could raise and what they could barter with family and neighbours. When you would buy a couple of ounces of loose pasta from big bins in the ‘alimentari’ or a paper ‘twist’ of parmesan cheese. We hear of times of terrible hardship, of long working days in the fields, but also joyous times of weddings and feast days.
We hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as we have enjoyed collecting them.
